Chelsea discovered a bird's nest in our front tree. There were two eggs inside. Chelsea watched the nest carefully and was delighted when two little chicks hatched. She collected one of the egg shells for show & tell at school. (Here she looks a little concerned because I told her that the mother bird may not come back if she touched the nest. But she did and all was fine.)

Tyler climbed up in the tree and took a picture. The chicks were really cute, in an ugly, gray, wet sort of way. Chelsea named them Charlie & Markie.

But then, on Saturday night we had a huge windstorm. The kind that makes even Mom and Dad nervous. Chelsea was terrified for the chicks and wanted to climb up in the tree and shield them from the wind. We told her that the mother bird made a strong nest and that the chicks would be fine. We were wrong.

On Sunday morning Chelsea found the chicks on the ground under the tree. The kids wanted to make a nest for them in an ice cream bucket and give them some worms, but we told them the chicks were too weak to eat and there wasn't anything they could do. It was a sad reality.

After a prolonged goodbye, Chelsea buried Charlie and Markie.
She said it wasn't fair that they only got to be five days old.
They will be dearly missed.

What a tender experience.
Are they buried by the mice?
I kind of hate those experiences for our kids. I hope Chelsea's handling things well.
That's so sad. In our Tierrasanta house every spring baby birds would fall from the top of our roof into our breezeway and die in front of our door. There's really nothing you can do. It's so sweet to see the kids tender hearts.
So sweet! Chelsea is such a good sweet little mother.
We've had similar experiences in our backyard. So sad. Last year, Samantha fed an abandoned baby bird worms and it lived (it was just days away from flying). It was so exciting for her. I'm convinced that Samantha and Chelsea would get along great!
